Frida & Diego

Self Portrait On The Bed Or Me And My Doll, 1937

My pal Whitney invited me along to the last day of the Frida & Diego exhibit at the AGO. I had been wanting to go for months but it was one of those things that I procrastinated on. Lucky for me that I have pals who also procrastinate and like company while they do it! The exhibit was wonderful!  It's really quite amazing to see paintings like this up close and personal. I just don't do it often enough.  Everything about them is so much more apparent in person. I love Frida's self portraits. I love the intimate nature of her work and the dream-like quality. I love the way she illustrates the relationship she has with her body and the nature of suffering. Some of the pieces were incredibly moving.

One of my favorites had Tina Modotti as a subject. I can't seem to find it anywhere online and photos were prohibited. Below is a photo of Frida and Modotti together.

The paintings by Diego Rivera were stunning as well.  I didn't realize he painted in so many different styles. My favorites are his pastel and watercolor works.  They are highly illustrative and depict life at work and in the marketplace.
