Big City Eats

My pal Tallulah invited me to an amazing dinner last year at Beast Restaurant here in Toronto. It was a dinner to celebrate and showcase her cousin Robin Shulman's amazing book Eat The City. The dinner was incredible to say the least. It was one of those meals that just didn't stop! Dish after amazing dish was passed around the table family-style, each one better than the next. All of the ingredients were locally sourced and some were even foraged by Robin herself. I think I will remember that food forever. Along with the meal everyone received a copy of the book.  I hadn't gotten around to reading it until recently and I'm so glad that I finally have. The book is "a tale of the fishers, foragers, butchers, farmers, poultry minders, sugar refiners, cane cutters, bee keepers, winemakers, and brewers who built New York." It passionately illustrates such a rich and vibrant history of urban food production in the five boroughs. It's about human desire for a connection to the source. It's about memories of the old ways and how to take it back. I think you will like it as much as did.

On the topic of making...J and I brewed our first batch of beer at home this weekend!  It will be ready for sampling in a few weeks and I can hardly wait!
